Right off the bat: I’m fine. My office closed later than they should have, and as a result I was exposed to someone who tested positive for Covid-19 so I’m quarantined for another week or so, but I feel well (knock wood) and I can finally, FINALLY, work safely from home. I’m very much looking forward to being able to take a walk outside next week, but Gus and I have plenty of food and meds and supplies and we’re currently incredibly, incredibly fortunate. My heart hurts for those who are in danger or have died as a result of this pandemic and our government’s ruinous neglect and malfeasance, but I hope you all are doing okay and managing these scary times as well as possible.
When I’ve written about fancy pajamas and my ridiculous robes in the past, I always thought that if I worked from home, these more decadent items would get more wear. Without a subway commute and the stares of my coworkers, I imagined my working-from-home self would be my most glamorous incarnation yet.
That…has not proven to be the case.
Not having a butler or a chef, I still have to cook and clean (Gus is useless), and silk fringe and ostrich feathers aren’t terribly practical. My anxiety is at an all time high, and sometimes it’s hard enough to take a daily shower– getting glam isn’t a priority. Plus, without being able to get to the pool for a swim (or outside, yet, for a nice long walk), some of my non-stretch garments feel snug, plus I’ve been gravitating towards work-from-home outfits that will allow for some yoga and stretching.
Here’s what I’ve ACTUALLY been wearing to work from home:
I’ve set a few work from home rules for myself: I have to shower every day, and I cannot wear the pajamas I slept in during the day. You’ll notice that doesn’t preclude me from changing from Sleeping Pajamas into Working Pajamas, and I’ve been wearing Eberjey jammies non-stop. Eberjey is a little spendy, but they have occasional sales throughout the year when you can snap up some of their super-soft-and-stretchy nightwear for much lower prices. I received a set of their signature Gisele pajamas from Journelle last year, and I knew I needed more, so I watched out for sales and stocked up. The fabric is pillowy soft and stretchy, feels wonderful against the skin, breathes well, and is even comfortable if you’re a wriggly sleeper, like I am. I’ve linked to the sets I own, but there are tons more to try. I wear a size Large in the Gisele long pieces, although I found the short sets were too small in the top for me, so if I ever try that style again, I’ll get an XL.
Eberjey Larken Good Sport Robe
My cozy winter robe died this year, and having had such good luck with Eberjey pajamas, I decided to give this robe a try. I was worried that since it was sized S, M, L that it might be small on me, but it’s sized so generously that I can really snuggle up in it, and the waist belt is nice and long. The inside is soft, soft, soft and fuzzy (note that it WILL shed on darker colors you’re wearing under it).
Dottie’s Delights Lace Hawa Pajamas
These are hitting a real sweet spot between “fancy” and “comfy” for me. This design is sadly sold out, but perhaps sheer stretchy jumpsuits might be more your speed?
Sugar Candy Wirefree Bra
My third rule of working from home is “you have to put on a bra, any bra”, a rule I’ve set both for comfort reasons and for video call reasons. Sugar Candy’s wirefree style is designed especially for F-H (UK)/G-K (US) cup sizes, and it comes the closest to giving me the shape and support of a wired bra. I have this bra in black, and it’s been my bra of choice for long plane rides for a few years now. You can cross the straps in back for additional lift and centeredness, although I find the hooks tend to pop out of the loops when I wear the straps crossed, so I usually go for the classic bra strap configuration. Like many people, I’m trying to focus my spending on necessities and charitable giving at the moment, but I might order another one of these next month, as it looks like working from home is here to stay.
Catherine D’Lish Caftan
This piece looks SUPER GLAM, but the material is so soft you feel like you’re wearing the perfectly broken-in t-shirt. For when I want to add a little sartorial drama to the work day.
Harlow & Fox Nova Silk Pyjamas
Speaking of sartorial drama, I plan to bust these out this week and no one on the IT team video call is gonna be ready for the glamour!
Jim Thompson Paisley Silk Chiffon Caftan
I picked up this dreamy caftan as a splurge present to myself when I was leaving Bangkok at the end of last year’s work trip. I didn’t think a one-size-only piece would fit me, as I’m larger than pretty much every other person I met in Thailand, but happily it fits beautifully, and the silk chiffon drapes and flows softly against the body. This piece not only opened my eyes to the delights of the caftan as a concept (it’s like a ROBE but it STAYS CLOSED, you just WANDER AROUND IN IT), but it now feels extra special and a little bittersweet: I’m worried about my Thai colleagues, and who knows when I’ll next get to go see them in person.
Hand-Knitted Slippers by MoniqueRae
MoniqueRae is an Etsy shop that sells adorable patterns for tons of different styles of hand-knitted slippers and other accessories, and fortunately for me, she also takes commissions! I’ve had her ballet flat style slippers in the past, and I’m currently rocking the scuff slippers in a heather denim blue color. They are the coziest things in the world and I’ve been wearing them non-stop.
And now that I know what works for me, here are some pieces I’d like to add to my WFH Wardrobe:
Another Sugar Candy Bra
I’ve wanted another one of these for a while, and now seems like the ideal time.
More Wirefree bras in general
Bravissimo Sleep Tops
These look they’d make great layering pieces, and for days when the thought of both a bra AND a shirt is simply too much.
I hope fervently that you all stay safe and well. Please take care of yourselves and look out for your communities, and, if you’re in the US and you’re able, please stay all the way home. The best way to keep other people from getting infected is to stay away from them. If you need something to distract and settle your mind, may I recommend ordering a romance novel care package from The Ripped Bodice? I sure did.
