My Top Five Lingerie Purchases of 2015

2015 was a great year for my lingerie drawer. Thanks to the extreme generosity of designers and PR reps as well as friends and family, I had the opportunity to try more new brands than ever before. [Rapid-fire roundup: I took a look at luxury UK brands like Harlow & Fox and Bosom Galore (relaunching this season as Katherine Hamilton Intimates and looking GORGEOUS), I broke outside of the UK with reviews of Samanta, Ewa Michalak (here, here, and here), Comexim, Anna Pardal, and Simone Perele, I dipped into corsets with Angela Friedman and Evgenia Lingerie, and thanks to a size change I got to run my first reviews of super-popular D-G brands like Claudette and the glorious new fuller bust range from Playful Promises.] I am still so awed by and thankful to everyone who’s offered me sets for review; even if a set hasn’t worked for me personally, it’s thrilling to have the chance to see how seriously different players in the industry take their craft, and to witness the sheer variety of styles and sizes that’s available now, compared to 10 years ago.

While I’m always delighted to accept a set for review, I wanted to take a moment to talk about the lingerie I buy for myself. Obviously if my budget were limitless my drawers would be full of silk and frills and feathers and opulent, over-the-top, editorial pieces, with a whole separate room just for my floofy robes. Seeing as how I AM on a budget, however, I try to keep my purchases focused on pieces that I know will get a lot of daily wear (and that are pretty and will make me happy).

Enell Sports Bra

So, I’m not exactly starting with the most glamorous item on the list, but I’m not exaggerating when I say I would not have been able to run my half marathon without it. As I mentioned in this post from the week of my race, there are more amazing sports bras than ever before for fuller bust sizes, but they were WRECKING my skin. My back, my ribcage, and my breast tissue were getting torn up, to the point where it was painful to exercise, or even, like, shower. The Enell sports bra was a lifesaver. I hope to do a full post at some point this year, because I had the opportunity to try a customized bra to address some of the fit issues I mentioned in my earlier post. Even with the non-customized version, though, my skin had a chance to heal, I didn’t have to cut my workouts short, and by the end of 2015 I had run over 1000 miles. Thanks for coming along for the ride, Enell!

Comfy? Check. Classic? Check. Minimalist? Check. Budget-friendly? Heck yes. I own this in both black and red; the black even made an appearance in the Agent Carter editorial. Paramour is available in Claudette’s Encore store, which now ships to the USA, UK, Ireland, Canada, France, and Germany. All sales are final, and all prices are a total steal. Claudette styles don’t show up on Encore until no other retailer is carrying them, so this is a last chance to pick up styles you loved before they’re gone for good.

As you might have gathered from my four picks above, I’m not generally a luxury lingerie consumer (while it obviously varies from consumer to consumer, for my personal financial situation, luxury bras are $100 and up). Neither my budget nor my size makes me most luxury brands’ target customer, so I’ve kind of conditioned myself to assuming “This is Not for Me” whenever I’m looking at or covering luxury lingerie brands. My bespoke silk corset that I commissioned for the Women of Mystery holiday series is definitely one of the most major purchases I’ve ever made. I wrote about the experience here, and I’m not kidding when I said I’m waiting for someone to invite me to a masquerade ball so I can wear it again. Call me!

These are infinitely cooler than I am.

What about you? Did you have a favorite bra or piece of lingerie you bought in 2015? Is there anything you’re looking forward to picking up in the new year?

The paramour is one of my staples. I bought it in the burgundy and I love it.

I bought the paramour entirely because you reviewed it and it is my most worn bra. Definitely one of my most loved as well! (Sidenote, I love that shot of you in the corset, you have such a lovely profile)

I love these kind of posts! It’s good to think of years in terms of by bras — certainly beats by dead-end job and/or relationship (is that just past me who did that?). My favorite buys from this year are the 2 bras I have from Addiction Lingerie (the Nouvelle full cup and Nouvelle 3D comfort). I cannot recommend these enough. They fit well, and the band is an absolute dream combo of stretchy yet supportive. They’re both basically the perfect, simple and sexy black bras.

Also, every bra I’ve purchased from Sarah who runs Ohhhlulu on Etsy. Her bras are an absolute wire-free boob heaven. She even custom makes bras to fit my G+ cup bust. Plus, I love supporting her one-woman shop.

Do you by any chance have any addiction knickers? I’ve been eyeing the nouvelle shorty but I’ve heard it runs small.

Unfortunately, no! My hips are far too wide (“birthing hips” is my mother’s loving term) to fit in them. I do love the design on them, tho! Ah, all the gorgeous mesh panels.

Me too! That’s why I’ve hesitated. It’s always a bummer to be sized out. Thank you!

Oooooooh please tell me more about your custom Ohhlulu bras! I love Sarah’s work!

I loooooove Ohhhlulu! I really recommend reaching out to her and asking for a custom size. She was very clear in promising no guarantee for perfect fit, but I threw caution to the wind and went for it. My first was about an inch or so too big all around, so she adjusted it for my next order and now they’re perfect. The support is obviously light, but they’re great for lounging, sleeping, and even casual weekend wear. The shape I get is surprisingly round, just a bit lower than my ‘normal’ wired bras. Here are a few she’s made for me:

I order from her so often, she has a pattern drafted just for me and my measurements.

Oh they’re beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing your experiences– I’d love to order from her one day!
