The Lingerie Addict recently ran a great piece about lingerie purchases she wishes she’d made, and I enjoyed reading it so much I thought I’d share my own!
Since becoming interested in lingerie I’ve slowly learned to think about the kind of lingerie “wardrobe” I’d like to curate for myself over time (I’m wayyy more particular about my lingerie wardrobe than my actual wear-to-work wardrobe). Going to trade shows and taking stock of the full-bust seasonal offerings as a whole helps me decide which pieces to save for and encourages me to resist impulse purchases. Sometimes, though, a piece I love sells out before I’ve saved up for it, or a few seasons pass and I think “damn, in retrospect, I TOTALLY wish I’d bought that for myself.” Without further ado, here are the lingerie pieces I loved and lost:
I can’t even really talk about this one. It’s so impractical and yet so lovely, and it brings my inner ballerina so much joy. I have to cheat a little to fit into the Gossard size range, and I kept hesitating every time I thought about purchasing it in favor of bras that ACTUALLY fit, and then one day it was gone. My beautiful little tutu was gone. Good-bye, beloved.
Toad Lillie Ouvert Knickers
These were the first pair of ouvert/open-back knickers I ever saw from one of the first handmade luxury brands I ever encountered, and I think they’re still my favorites. Toad Lillie is no longer in production (the designer, Laurie, currently writes for The Lingerie Addict), so alas: these handmade silk lovelies will never be mine. Look at that teal-and-black lace goodness– just beautiful.
Bravissimo Can Can
I kept saving money for this set last year only for one of the pieces to sell out in my size, then pop back into stock at the same moment another piece sold out, then that one came back into stock but the other one sold out, etc. The set is beautiful (and I particularly love the nice deep suspender belt), but it was released right around the holidays, and I didn’t have the extra cash to spend. I’m sorry beautiful forest green bra! I love you from afar.
Fauve Lucia in Persian Blue
This remains one of my favorite collections from Fauve, the now-defunct higher-end sister line to popular full-bust brands Freya and Fantasie. At the time of its release I was just learning about the different full-bust brands and was focused on building up a wardrobe of basics; I was also in an entry-level position with little discretionary income, so it never made its way home with me. By the time I’d saved the money this set was impossible to find online, and the NYC Saks only had the padded half cup style in stock (I prefer balconettes). But look at the yummy color! The silky asymmetrical bows! It came in a few other colors in later seasons, but this blue was hands-down my favorite.
Trashy Diva Flapper Robe
This is still available in size Small, and there’s a lovely red version available in all sizes, but the black and gold one is SO Miss Fisher I can’t even handle it. Once again, when it was actually in stock my discretionary spending was reserved for basics and sports bras (and my trip to London) instead of tassel-y flapper robes. It would have been covered in cat fur immediately, but still.
Kiss Me Deadly Jezebel Knicker
Julia Lambert has this and it makes me scream with envy. Just look at it. Sheer with dots AND a blue sash and gosh, it’s perfect.
Bravissimo Darling Heart
This set is currently available in red, and yes, yes, I love red lingerie, but I REALLY like this original navy version. It’s got whimsy and charm, but I think this color scheme with brightly contrasting embroidery also brings a little sophistication. The name is dead on: this is darling.
Miss Mandalay Lacie
So delicate, so beautiful, and absolutely unique when it was released. There were very few upscale, luxury (or luxury-looking) full-bust brands available the first time I saw this lovely Miss Mandalay set (I can’t remember when this collection was released, but it was certainly a few years ago. I think?). Lacie felt so light and so sexy and so sophisticated, and I thought it was one of the most beautiful things I’d ever seen (still do).
What about you? Do you have any “ones that got away”?
