5 Full-Bust Lingerie Brands to Watch in 2019

While I’ve spent most of January and February in New York hunkered down under blankets, fighting off a cold inside and the bitter cold outside, I’ve had the chance to do a bit of a closet purge. I’ve accumulated a lot (A LOT) of lingerie over the last few years, and both my size and personal tastes have changed and evolved over that same time. I cleared out several shopping bags worth of bras to donate and recycle, and the process of editing down my lingerie wardrobe got me thinking about the kinds of styles I might want to try this year. You’d think having a full lingerie chest even after doing a massive clear-out would be a deterrent to shopping, but no, here’s an overview of five lingerie brands I’ve got my eye on in 2019.

Elomi

Elomi Sachi Leopard Bra

For my money, there isn’t a mainstream lingerie brand in the plus size full bust category that can beat Elomi. The bras are widely available, recent focus on fit refinements have paid off extraordinarily, there’s a strong range of core everyday styles, and there are new fashion styles that are setting the bar for other brands to scramble to meet. Elomi has done such great work building up some key categories, to the point where they’re outpacing some of their non-plus size competitors. This swim collection, this sensational leopard take on their Sachi set, and this lovely longline/bralette style are, to me, standout styles in the full bust category as a whole, let alone plus size. When someone asks me about plus size DD+ bras and says they’re not sure where to start, Elomi is literally the only brand I’d name.

Playful Promises

This is one of the brands I’m most looking forward to seeing at Curve next week (although I confess I’ve already had a sneak peek at the Fall/Winter 2019 lookbooks, which, AHHH, give me everything now!). ANOTHER size expansion this year sees some back sizes added in their plus range and cup sizes added to their full bust and curve ranges, we’ll see another collaboration with Gabi Fresh drop, and Fuller Figure Fuller Bust has a stunning collection coming out that features soft lingerie pieces (like robes and capes!) for both core and plus sizes. I recently tried my first 2019 style, the lovely Ezmae, and was impressed with both the fit and comfort. I basically just need to allocate all my 2019 lingerie budget to Playful Promises, I think.

Harlow & Fox

Decadence on decadence. Just when I think things can’t possibly get any grander, they do. If there’s one single brand that is aspirational for me personally, it’s this one. I very much aspire to be a woman of means whose work-from-home wear consists of reversible silk robes, matching silk gowns, and the occasional silk pajama to mix things up, and whose lingerie drawers are full of metallic gold embroidery, rapturously gorgeous lace, real pearl charms, coordinating harnesses and corsets, and gleaming silk. I couldn’t include this piece in my top lingerie purchases of 2018 roundup because it was a gift, but the Eleanor Damson half slip has become an indispensable part of my wardrobe. Every season is full of delights that make me gasp out loud, and I can’t wait to see what comes next. (Psst: if you’re in New York, stop by Perfumariē in Soho on Saturday, February 23 for a rare chance to shop Harlow & Fox in person!)

Parfait

Parfait Briana Wire Bra (C-H cup sizes)

Parfait Briana Wire Bra (C-H cup sizes)

Don’t sleep on Parfait, y’all! This brand was really buzzy when I started blogging since they were one of the few full-bust brands available in the US that was actively expanding their size ranges, but the buzz seems to have quieted down since then. I admit I haven’t worn Parfait in a while (not all of their bras go up to GG or H cups), but I’m always quietly impressed when I see their collections at trade shows, and I love how accessible they are in the US (you can shop a pretty wide selection at Nordstrom and Kohls, for example). They’re not going after the luxury customer or the trend/fetish customer (although some Spring/Sumer 2019 pieces are at Neiman Marcus???!?); instead, they’re quietly working away at creating pretty, wearable pieces in a range of colors at an approachable price point (some wired bras are less than $50 at full price, which is rare in DD+ sizes). From nightwear and bralettes to structured bras to swim to activewear, Parfait keeps adding styles, expanding their size ranges catalogues, and creating gorgeously inclusive lookbooks and seasonal campaigns.

Katherine Hamilton

As a smaller independent label with a niche size range (one of the few brands that includes 26 backs in their production runs), Katherine Hamilton Intimates doesn’t release as many collections/pieces in a season as some of the other brands on this list, but I included them because (1) they make some of the best-fitting luxury full bust bras on the market and (2) hello, the upcoming Abrielle collection is completely beautiful. It is SO beautiful. It stops me in my tracks whenever it pops up in my social media feeds. I’ve had great experiences with the fit and quality of Katherine Hamilton bras (wearing a bespoke set in this review and the Abbie collection in the Cassandra editorial), so if you’re looking to dip your toes into the world of luxury lingerie, this brand is a great place to start.

I’ll be seeing the Fall/Winter 2019 lingerie and swim collections at Curve next week, which will be a great chance to get a picture of the full year’s lingerie offerings. Any brands you’re interested to see more of? Anything on your 2019 lingerie wishlist?

I’d love to hear about what you decided not to keep and why. Not in a negative way to those brands but to hear about changing taste and what you look for in lingerie now as opposed to in the past. I’m so glad you resumed blogging your writing and photos have always been my favorite.

Thank you so much, Anna! I mostly had to be really firm and take stuff out of my drawers that either didn’t fit anymore, wasn’t my style, or that I’d never worn and really honestly couldn’t see myself wearing (I keep a lot of things because “I might need it someday!”, but the fact is if that ever happens I could just buy something then, why am I letting it take up room and making me feel weirdly guilty?) A LOT of what I gave away were review samples that just weren’t my style or didn’t fit, and I said goodbye to mostly anything padded (I know some full bust folks swear by padding, but I just don’t love it and it takes up too much space in my drawer). I got rid of prints and colors that weren’t my style (mostly ditsy prints, really big kitschy prints, and some of the brighter colors that just get dingy because I wear so much black), and bras that were faded, dingy, or worn out. I threw out any underwear I didn’t want that had been worn, for hygiene reasons. I still have a ton of bras sitting in a bag that I couldn’t place with friends, and while I’d like to sell them, I feel ethically icky about selling something I received for free, so I’ll probably donate them to Journelle or another store that does bra drives.

I’m not a ruthless curator of my collection, but I am trying to focus on only keeping things that: fit fantastically well and work with my wardrobe (so, yeah, this does mean more black and beige, who am I becoming?!?), are really spectacular and special (basically my luxury collection, which I keep stored in Harlow & Fox boxes behind my bed), and that feel chic, elegant, and timeless. This does include strappy bits and fancy garter belts; I still gotta be me 🙂
