I was on hiatus in January of last year, so it’s been a while since I looked back at a year’s worth of lingerie purchases (although it was cool to revisit 2015 and 2016). I’m in the ridiculously fortunate position that I get to try a lot of lingerie risk-free, thanks to review samples or collaborations, but I do like to step back and take a look at what I choose to purchase when it’s my own hard-earned dollars on the line. I don’t have an unlimited shopping budget, so usually if I’m going to buy something, it means it’s a tried-and-true favorite, or it’s something really special that I couldn’t resist.
I thought, between the hiatus/slower blogging schedule and some new budgeting initiatives, that I hadn’t bought that much lingerie in 2018. And then I started writing a list of what I bought and, well, whoops, look I gotta be me. So this list doesn’t begin to cover everything I bought in 2018, but it does cover some of the pieces I wear the most as well as some of the pieces that feel the most special to me.
Elomi Matilda in Cafe Au Lait
Elomi might be my favorite bra brand right now, and this is the bra that made me fall in love with them. Until 2018, I’d only worn Elomi bras when I needed 34-36 bands, and I wore them because they were there, not because they fit me well. But Elomi’s done a ton of work on their bras since the last time I tried them, and when Sam from Broad Lingerie selected Matilda for me to try for the Day in the Life editorial we collaborated on last year, she said “I really think you’ll like this.” She was so right! Not only does Elomi now make 32 band sizes, so I get a better fit in the band, but the cups are now the perfect shape for me. Sam sent me the black bra from Broad Lingerie, and when I did my annual trip to the Coinstar machine later in the year to cash in my loose change, I spent it on this Cafe Au Lait shade to wear under light-colored tops. The pretty sheer panel keeps the four-part cup shape from feeling overwhelming, the dotted embroidery is a welcome change from floral lace, and the hook on the straps allows you to convert it to a racer-back style. This is a really, really, REALLY good plus size bra, with one of the best size ranges around! Go get it!
Figleaves Opaque Black Hold-ups
This is hands-down the hosiery I wear the most. I pretty much live in black tights in the winter, but I can’t bear the feeling of pantyhose or control tops around my belly and waist. Plus, I have long legs, so very often one-size-fits-all tights just fall down as the day goes on. With hold-ups, I put them on in the morning and don’t have to fuss with them until I take them off again at the end of the day. This Fall Figleaves ran a buy-2-get-1-free promo on their hosiery, so I picked up three two-packs of these hold-ups. One of the best purchases I made all year.
Boudoir by D’lish Kaylin Kaftan
So. much. fabric. So soft! So flowy! So DRAMATIC!
Lollll oops this was definitely an impulse purchase, but I regret nothing. A caftan that feels like a soft comfy t-shirt but looks like a gown? So you can sweep around your apartment like you’re about to sing an aria or cast a spell? Yes please. This style is finally back in stock (at 50% off!) in the 50″ length, with 55″ lengths (what I’m wearing at 5’10”) and 60″ lengths coming soon.
Harlow & Fox Andromeda Robe
I have a bit of a fancy robe addiction, and Harlow & Fox is a big ol’ enabler. I’ve loved this stunning, flowy, sheer robe for a long time and dreamed of one day completing my Andromeda set, so when a size Large popped up in Harlow & Fox’s first ever online sample sale, I sat down on a bench in Washington Square Park and placed an order without hesitation. It makes me feel like a fancy lady in a country manor who might one day be called upon to help solve a crime, which is all I want from my robes.
Playful Promises Adira Bra
I’ve worn this bra so much more than I ever imagined I would. I bought it because I loved that the strappy elements were adjustable and because I wanted to support Playful Promises’ first cup size expansion past a G cup, but for such a dramatic statement bra, it’s wound up being a surprisingly versatile wardrobe piece for me. Sometimes I get sucked into buying boudoir lingerie for the novelty of it, only for the pieces to sit forlornly unworn in my drawer, but this bra has gotten some serious play in 2018. I can’t wait to see what Playful Promises does next!
What about you? Any lingerie purchases from 2018 that rocked your world, or at any rate made it more comfortable? Anything in particular you’re hoping to try in 2019?
